Disney Sing-Along Songs Overview Part 4: Brand New Tapes, Plus some Familiar Ones (1994-1999)

Hey everyone! How's it going? I'm doing okay. I'm back with the fourth part of my Disney Sing-Along Songs overview series. This time I'm taking a look at all the tapes that came out between 1994 and 1999, including the third re-releases of eleven of the first twelve tapes in the series. I've got alot to cover so without further ado, let's get into it!

First up is of course, Heigh-Ho as it was renumbered as the first volume in the series during it's second release back in 1990. Aside from the new title card and the Disney Sing-Along Songs promo at the end the only difference between this release and the previous ones is that "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" and "The Siamese Cat Song" were edited out of the tape. This was also the final time this tape would be re-released. It never got a DVD release in the 2000s.

Next was Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah. It also got a new title card and previews for Muppet Classic Theater and the Disney Favorite Stories collection, which also started coming out in 1994. At the end is the most recent promo for the Disney Sing-Along Songs series, which went up to The Twelve Days of Christmas, but the promo only included up to Friend Like Me, and a promo for the Walt Disney Mini-Classics releases of Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, and Winnie the Pooh and A Day for Eeyore, which is probably a leftover from earlier releases as all four featurettes were re-released under the Storybook Classics label in 1994.

Up next is You Can Fly!. Aside from having the brand new title card, and having "He's a Tramp" removed from the tape, it's exactly the same as the 1990 release, including the Disney Sing-Along Songs promo at the end.

Unlike most of the other tapes from series 1 and series 2 that were re-released with the new packaging, The Bare Necessities didn't get the updated title card. It did get an updated promo though to include all of the releases that were re-released with the brand new packaging, and it includes the first brand new release in the series, Circle of Life, which I'll be talking about later.

Fun with Music is the only tape in the series to not get a third VHS re-release, it was released overseas as 101 Notes of Fun, but no new re-release with updated packaging or anything.

Under the Sea is next and it got an updated title card as well as opening and closing promos. The opening promos are for the Disney Favorite Stories collection and a set of Winnie the Pooh video releases known as Winnie the Pooh: Learning which are repackaged episodes of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The closing promo is the same Disney Sing-Along Songs promo from 1993 which goes up to Friend Like Me.

Up next is Disneyland Fun. This is the tape that I have in my collection. It also got an updated title card. The opening and closing promos are exactly the same as they are on Under the Sea.

Aside from the addition of the closing Disney Sing-Along Songs promo at the end, the third re-release for Very Merry Christmas Songs is exactly the same as the previous two releases. It wouldn't get a new title card until the 2002 VHS and DVD releases, which I'll be talking about in the next part.

Next is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious which is actually the re-release of I Love to Laugh. They changed the title for whatever reason. It, of course, got the updated title card, but the opening promos are exactly the same as they are on Under the Sea and Disneyland Fun, but there's no closing promo.

Next is Be Our Guest. The only difference in these releases is that the song, "Little Wooden Head" is removed. It didn't get a new title card or new promos at the end.

Friend Like Me is next and there's no difference between this release and the original. Promos, title cards, everything is the same.

Next is The Twelve Days of Christmas. It's also the same as it's previous release, as it had only been released for the first time in 1993.

Next is Let's Go to the Circus! the first in the Mickey's Fun Songs re-releases. All of the Mickey's Fun Songs releases got new opening promos and new title cards. The 1996 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo is added, and updates to the Disney Favorite Stories and Winnie the Pooh video promos are included.

Next is Campout at Walt Disney World. It has the same promos at the beginning as Let's Go to the Circus! and has a new title card.

The first brand new release in this series was Circle of Life, which was released to celebrate the theatrical release of The Lion King. It was released on December 16th, 1994. While there's the same promo for Muppet Classic Theater from previous releases, this tape includes a trailer for Pocahontas which was scheduled to come out in the summer of 1995. It also includes the 1994 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo at the end. I never owned this tape, but we rented it a couple of times. Also because the majority of the songs on this tape are from the then most recent Disney movies, they're alot longer than the songs typically are on these tapes, so there's only 8 of them instead of the usual 11 or 12. This is also the tape where a repeat from a previous tape would appear. The host for this tape was Jiminy Cricket.

Those songs are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "Circle of Life" (The Lion King), "Part of Your World" (The Little Mermaid), "Prince Ali" (Aladdin), "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" (The Lion King), "Belle" (Beauty and the Beast), "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" (The Aristocats, originally seen on The Bare Necessities), and "When You Wish Upon a Star" (Pinocchio).

The final re-release to come out for this series was the 1996 re-release of Mickey's Fun Songs: Beach Party at Walt Disney World. The promos at the beginning and the end are the same as the other Mickey's Fun Songs re-releases and it also got a new title card.

The final Disney Sing-Along Songs release we ever rented was Colors of the Wind which came out on July 21st, 1995, to coincide with the theatrical release of Pocahontas. This is the first tape, maybe even the only one to have the title song not appear until the very end of the tape. The tape opens with a promo for the home video release of A Goofy Movie, which had come out in theatres earlier that year. There's also a promo for the four tapes in the Disney Princess Collection, which are releases of episodes from The Little Mermaid: The Animated Series and Aladdin: The Animated Series. The promos at the end are the 1994 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo and a promo for Mickey's Fun Songs, which wouldn't be re-released as volumes of Disney Sing-Along Songs until 1996. This is the final tape that has a host and it's Ludwig Von Drake.

The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "Just Around the Riverbend" (Pocahontas), "The Work Song" (Cinderella, previously seen on The Bare Necessities), "Why Should I Worry" (Oliver & Company, previously seen on Fun with Music), "Little Wooden Head" (Pinocchio, previously seen on the 1992 release of Be Our Guest), "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (The Lion King), "Higitus Figitus" (The Sword in the Stone), and "Colors of the Wind" (Pocahontas).

Next is Topsy Turvy, which was released on June 26th, 1996 to coincide with the theatrical release of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. There aren't any hosts on this tape, unlike previous releases, aside for the Christmas tapes and the Mickey's Fun Songs re-releases. The tape opens with a trailer for the 1996 direct-to-video film, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, the second sequel to Aladdin, a promo for the home video release of Oliver & Company, and the 1996 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo. There aren't any promos at the end of the tape.

The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "Topsy Turvy" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), "You've Got a Friend in Me" (Toy Story), "Stand By Me" (Timon & Pumbaa), "Streets of Gold" (Oliver & Company), "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song (Silly Song)" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, originally seen on Heigh-Ho), "Out There" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), "Family" (James and the Giant Peach), "The Unbirthday Song" (Alice in Wonderland, originally seen on Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah), "Topsy Turvy (Reprise)".

Next is Pongo & Perdita, a live action installment of the series that was released on December 3rd 1996 to promote the theatrical release of the live action remake of 101 Dalmatians, which starred Glenn Close. It opens with a promo for the Animated Storybook PC CD-ROM of the 1961 animated version of 101 Dalmatians, the 1996 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo, and a promo for the home video releases for the animated series, Spot, the Dog, which was based on the children's book series of the same name. There aren't any previews at the end. There are also only two actual Disney songs on this tape, the rest are songs about dogs or traditional children's songs.

The songs on the tape are: "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (Song of the South), "Following the Leader" (Peter Pan, with the audio from Disneyland Fun), "Do Your Ears Hang Low?", "(Going to) the Bow-Wow Ball", "Hokey Puppy (Hokey Pokey)", "Pongo (Bingo)", "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?", "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)", and "The More We Get Together".

The next three tapes are completely different from anything else in this series. They were released and organized by the era the songs were released in. They're the Collection of All-Time Favorites. All three tapes were released on July 22nd, 1997. All three open with promos for Winnie the Pooh home video releases, including the second Storybook Classics releases for all four Winnie the Pooh featurettes and Spot the Dog releases. Let's dig into them and see what they're about.

First up is The Early Years. This tape includes all of the Disney songs that were on previous Disney Sing-Along Songs tapes from Three Little Pigs (1933) to The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) and they're in the order that they appeared on the tapes they originally appeared on. The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (Song of the South), "Give a Little Whistle" (Pinocchio), "Whistle While You Work" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" (Three Little Pigs), "Casey Junior" (Dumbo), "The Merrily Song" (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad), "Little Wooden Head" (Pinocchio), "Heigh-Ho" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "When I See An Elephant Fly" (Dumbo), "The Three Caballeros" (The Three Caballeros), "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "Everybody's Got a Laughing Place" (Song of the South), and "When You Wish Upon a Star" (Pinocchio).

Next is The Magic Years. The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "You Can Fly" (Peter Pan), "The Bare Necessities" (The Jungle Book), "Mickey Mouse March" (Mickey Mouse Club), "Following the Leader" (Peter Pan), "That's What Makes the World Go Round" (The Sword in the Stone), "Once Upon a Dream" (Sleeping Beauty), "Oo-De-Lally" (Robin Hood), "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" (Cinderella), "Bella Notte" (Lady and the Tramp), "All in the Golden Afternoon" (Alice in Wonderland), "Higitus Figitus" (The Sword in the Stone), "A Spoonful of Sugar" (Mary Poppins), "Scales and Arpeggios" (The Aristocats), and "I Wan'na Be Like You" (The Jungle Book).

The last in this subseries was The Modern Classics. The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Songs", "Circle of Life" (The Lion King), "Be Our Guest" (Beauty and the Beast), "One Last Hope" (Hercules), "Under the Sea" (The Little Mermaid), "A Whole New World" (Aladdin), "Topsy Turvy" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), "Colors of the Wind" (Pocahontas), "Prince Ali" (Aladdin), "Part of Your World" (The Little Mermaid), and "Zero to Hero" (Hercules). This is the first tape to include songs from Hercules in North America, as the tape released to coincide with the theatrical release of that movie was only released overseas.

Next is Honor to Us All, which was released on June 28th, 1998 to coincide with the theatrical release of Mulan. The tape opens with the exact same Winnie the Pooh video release promo as the Collection of All-Time Favorites do, as well as the same Spot, the Dog video release promo, the home video promo for the Disney dub of Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service, a Disney Channel music video of PB & J Otter, which is a show I know of, but never watched, and a promo for the Mulan soundtrack on CD and Audiocassette. There aren't any promos at the end. Aside from three or four songs, most of the songs on this tape are from direct-to-video sequels.

The songs on this tape are: "Disney Sing Along Songs Theme Song", "Honor to Us All" (Mulan), "Zero to Hero" (Hercules, previously seen on Collection of All-Time Favorites: The Modern Classics), "The Siamese Cat Song" (Lady and the Tramp, previously seen on the original VHS release of Heigh-Ho), "Where Do I Go From Here?" (Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World), "A Guy Like You" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (Cinderella), "We Are One" (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride), "A Little Thought" (Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World), "On the Open Road" (A Goofy Movie), "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" (Hercules), "Father and Son" (Aladdin and the King of Thieves), and "I'll Make a Man Out of You" (Mulan).

Next is Happy Haunting: Party at Disneyland!, which was released on August 25th, 1998 to celebrate...Halloween? Yeah, it's about two months too early for Halloween, but hey, it still works. Something to note about this tape is that Tyler Hoechlin, who is now known for playing Derek on Teen Wolf and Superman/Clark Kent on Supergirl and Superman & Lois, made his debut on this tape as one of the kids visiting Disneyland for the Halloween party that Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are hosting. The tape opens with pretty much the same promos as the previous tape, except the 1998 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo and a promo for the home video release of the 1998 direct-to-video film, Summer of the Monkeys are added to it instead of the Mulan soundtrack. Like all of the more recent releases there aren't any previews at the end of the tape.

The songs on this tape are: "It's Halloween", "Five Little Pumpkins", "Grim Grinning Ghosts" (Originally seen on Disneyland Fun), "Chicken Lips and Lizard Hips", "Headless Horseman", "Five Little Witches", "Spooky Scary Skeletons", "Casting My Spell", "Trick or Treat", and "The Monster Mash".

Next up is Sing a Song with Pooh Bear, which was originally released as it's own separate release before being folded into Disney Sing-Along Songs for it's mid-2000s VHS re-release and DVD releases. As the title says, this is an all Winnie the Pooh Sing-Along. The tape opens with the same Winnie the Pooh home video release promo and the same promo for Spot the Dog from the last couple of releases. The new promos are the 1999 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo, a promo for The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue and the re-releases of the first two movies in the series, a promo for the Animated Storybook CD-ROM for Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too and a promo for the Disney Channel Original Series for children, Out of the Box. The tape ends with a special feature on how to draw Winnie the Pooh hosted by Gopher, the one character who's "not in the book". If you're a Winnie the Pooh fan, you know what that means.

The songs are: "Winnie the Pooh", "Rumbly in My Tumbly" (Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree), "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers", "Kanga Roo Hop" (Song that's exclusive to this tape), "Try a Little Something New" (Welcome to Pooh Corner), "You're the One and Only One" (Welcome to Pooh Corner), "The Floating Song" (The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), "Harvest What You Grow" (Another song exclusive to this tape), "Heffalumps and Woozles" (Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day), "Nothing's Too Good for a Friend" (The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh "The Piglet Who Would Be King"), and "My Song" (A third song exclusive to this tape).

Finally we have Flik's Musical Adventure at Disney's Animal Kingdom which was released on June 8th, 1999, probably to celebrate the home video release of A Bug's Life. It's a mix of live action and CG Animation and is hosted by Flik from A Bug's Life. The tape opens with a promo for the 1999 Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection VHS releases of Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland, which shows the original 1994 cover art for both movies, which had been used for subsequent printings of the tapes, so I guess they hadn't decided to release these editions with new cover art, a promo for the home video release of Madeline in Paris, a promo for the home video release (VHS and DVD) of A Bug's Life, the same Winnie the Pooh home video release promo from previous Disney Sing-Along Songs releases, and a promo for Playhouse Disney Channel, which would become Playhouse Disney later on. There's nothing at the end of the tape.

The songs on this tape are: "Circle of Life", "Welcome to Harambe", "On Safari", "I Wan'na Be Like You", "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby", "Walk the Dinosaur", "It's a Bug's World", "Asia", "He Lives in You", and "Circle of Life (Reprise)".

That's it for the '90s. The releases going forward, with the exception of the one release from 2000, are VHS and DVD releases until 2005 where they become DVD releases only. But next time we're leaving the '90s behind and entering the 2000s, where I was in high school and had no idea that the Disney Sing-Along Songs series still existed as they weren't being advertised on the few Disney movies we did own or rent at the time, and we didn't see them on the shelf at the video store the few times I got to go to the video store with my parents.

That my friends is gonna be it for me for tonight and for this week. I'll be back next week with lots more reviews and other posts, including the fifth and final part of this series. So until then have a great weekend and I will talk to you all later. Take care.
