Disney Sing-Along Songs Overview Part 5: Introducing DVDs (2000-2006)

Hey everyone! How's it going? I'm doing pretty well. Happy Ottawa Comiccon weekend for those of you who live in my area and are attending. I can't be with you this year, but I'm there in spirit. Today I'm going to be discussing the final wave of Disney Sing-Along Songs releases that came out from 2000 to 2006. There aren't as many new releases this time around, just many DVD releases of previously released material. This is going to be the final part of this overview as the series ended in 2006 and Disney didn't re-release any of the few DVD releases they did do. So let's get into it.

The last VHS only release for Disney Sing-Along Songs is actually technically not part of that series. It's actually a follow-up to 1999's Sing a Song with Pooh Bear. It's called Sing a Song with Tigger and it was released on March 7th, 2000 as a promotion for The Tigger Movie (2000), which had come out the previous month. I've never owned this release, but looking up the opening on YouTube it's the same opening that the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection VHS and DVD releases for the year 2000 all have. There's the trailer for The Tigger Movie (2000), and home video trailers for Toy Story 2 (1999), and The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000), the 2000 promo for the Spot the Dog home video collection, and the old 1997 promo for the Winnie the Pooh home video collection that has been on pretty much every Sing-Along Songs VHS tape since the Collection of All-Time Favorites tapes. And finally it has the Playhouse Disney promo from 1999 as well.

After the program is five music videos. The first is "A Girl Worth Fighting For" from Mulan (1998), the second is "Scales and Arpeggios" from The Aristocats (1970), the third is "The Best of Friends" from The Fox and the Hound (1981), the fourth is "Steady as a Beating Drum" from Pocahontas (1995), the fifth is "Higitus Figitus" from The Sword in the Stone (1964). I guess Disney really wanted to promote the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection, because except for The Sword in the Stone, which would be released as part of the collection on VHS and DVD in 2001, the other four movies were all being released on VHS and DVD in 2000.

The songs on the tape are: "Winnie the Pooh", "The Scrapbook Song", "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers" (The Tigger Movie), "Whoop-de-Dooper Bounce" (The Tigger Movie), "Forever & Ever" (Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin), "Round My Family Tree" (The Tigger Movie), "I Wanna Scare Myself" (Boo to You Too! Winnie the Pooh), "Playing in the Wood", "King of the Beasties" (The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), "How to be a Tigger" (The Tigger Movie), "Pirates is What We'll Be" (The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh), "Everything is Right" (Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin), and "The Scrapbook Song (Reprise)".

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah was re-released for the final time in 2001. While the packaging style is the exact same as the 1994 to 1999 Disney Sing-Along Songs releases, the colour is red instead of the dark blue that the 1994 release was. This 2001 release is also a rare one, so not very many people have it. This was the last VHS release to have the 1994-1999 packaging and series logo. It was also the final release of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah ever. As far as I can tell, based on the info on the Disney Wiki, the songs are exactly the same and there was no alterations made from the 1994 release, except for the opening and closing previews.

The first DVD release came in 2002 with the VHS and DVD release of Very Merry Christmas Songs. Because I'm focusing mostly on the DVDs from here on out I won't be talking about the openings for these releases since they can be skipped on the DVD. Some brand new songs were included on this edition, in addition to the original songs. It also finally got a new title card.

The new songs on this DVD are: "It's Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas", "Winnie the Pooh's Jingle Bells" (Winnie the Pooh: A Very Merry Pooh Year), "Toyland" (Babes in Toyland), "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth" (sung by Goofy and Max), "Seasons of Giving" (Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving), "As Long As There's Christmas" (Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas), "Jingle Bell Rock" (sung by Bobby Helms), "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (sung by Brenda Lee), "White Christmas" (sung by Bing Crosby), and "The Best Christmas of All" (Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed In at the House of Mouse).

Next is On My Way which was released on October 28th, 2003 to coincide with the theatrical release of Brother Bear. The release is hosted by Rutt and Tuke, the Moose from the movie, voiced by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, because, yes, Rutt and Tuke are the Moose versions of Bob and Doug McKenzie. As with all the releases from 2002 to 2004, there was a VHS version of this release too. And it has a brand new opening theme song sequence, with the song sung by Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid.

The songs on this release are: "Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song", "On My Way" (Brother Bear), "Try Again" (101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure), "Following the Leader" (Peter Pan, originally seen on Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah), "Go the Distance" (Hercules), "I'm Still Here" (Treasure Planet), "Digga Tunnah" (The Lion King 1 1/2), "On the Open Road" (A Goofy Movie, originally seen on Honor to Us All), "Aloha, E Komo Mai" (Stitch! The Movie), and "Welcome" (Brother Bear).

Sometime in 2003 Circle of Life was re-released on VHS and released on DVD. It includes the updated theme song opening with Sebastian, and the songs are introduced by Keith David, who had voiced Goliath on Gargoyles up to this point, though he'd have several other voice roles at Disney after this, specifically Doctor Facilier in The Princess and the Frog (2009).

The new songs added to this release are: "Following the Leader" (Peter Pan, previously seen on Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and On My Way), "Hakuna Matata" (The Lion King), "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (Timon & Pumbaa), "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" (Timon & Pumbaa), "W-I-L-D" (The Jungle Book 2), "The Jungle Rhythm" (The Jungle Book 2), and "When You Wish Upon a Star" (Pinocchio).

Also in 2003, around March, Sing a Song with Pooh Bear was re-released on VHS and released on DVD as Sing a Song with Pooh Bear and Piglet Too as a promotion for Piglet's Big Movie which was released in theatres on March 21st, 2003. Like with Circle of Life, this release had the new version of the Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song. All of the songs are the same as on the 1999 VHS release, but two new songs from the movie were added. They are: "With a Few Good Friends" and "Sing Ho (For the Life of a Bear)". Both songs were sung by Carly Simon.

Next up is Little Patch of Heaven, which was released on March 23rd, 2004 ahead of the theatrical release of Home on the Range (2004), which was the last 2-D animated movie that Disney made until The Princess and the Frog in 2009. There are mostly country folk songs on this release, aside from three songs from the movie and a return of a classic song from earlier releases.

The songs on this release are: "Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song", "Little Patch of Heaven" (Home on the Range), "Yodel-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo" (Home on the Range), "Home on the Range", "Oh Susanna!" (originally sung in Campout at Walt Disney World), "Old Macdonald Had a Farm", "She'll Be Comin' Around the Mountain" (also originally sung in Campout at Walt Disney World), "The Farmer in the Dell", "Pecos Bill" (Melody Time), "A Cowboy Needs a Horse" (A Cowboy Needs a Horse, originally seen on Heigh-Ho), "Stanley Rides Again" (Stanley's Dinosaur Round-Up), and "Anytime You Need a Friend" (Home on the Range).

The next release to come out in 2004 was Disney Princess Sing-Along Songs Vol. 1: Once Upon a Dream, which was released on September 7th, 2004. It's a collection of Disney Princess and other songs from earlier Sing-Along Songs releases.

The songs are: "Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song", "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (Cinderella), "Part of Your World" (The Little Mermaid), "A Whole New World" (Aladdin), "Once Upon a Dream" (Sleeping Beauty), "I'm Wishing/One Song" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "Colors of the Wind" (Pocahontas), "Beauty and the Beast" (Beauty and the Beast), "Reflection" (Mulan), "Like Other Girls" (Mulan II), "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" (Hercules), "Put It Together (Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo)" (Cinderella II: Dreams Come True), "Sweet Wings of Love" (Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers), and "If You Can Dream" (Disney Princess).

Next is the 2005 DVD of Disneyland Fun. All the songs and title cards are the same as they were on the 1994 VHS release. I have this in my collection, along with the 1994 VHS release and I still love it to this day.

Next is the 2005 DVD release of Campout at Walt Disney World. The Mickey's Fun Songs title card and opening sequence have been restored for the DVD. All of the songs are the same though.

The 2005 DVD of Beach Party at Walt Disney World is basically the same with the Mickey's Fun Songs title card and opening sequence restored. I have this release in my personal collection and it's pretty good.

The last DVD release of a previous Sing-Along Songs release for 2005 is Flik's Musical Adventure. I've never seen this one so I don't know if they changed anything from the original VHS release or not.

The last Sing-Along Songs release for 2005 is Disney Princess Sing-Along Songs Vol. 2: Enchanted Tea Party. Since I've never owned or seen this release I don't have much else to say about it.

The songs are: "Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song", "So This Is Love" (Cinderella), "Kiss the Girl" (The Little Mermaid), "Forget About Love" (The Return of Jafar), "Something There" (Beauty and the Beast), "Just Around the Riverbend" (Pocahontas), "Someday My Prince Will Come" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "I Wonder" (Sleeping Beauty), "Honor to Us All" (Mulan), "Love" (Robin Hood), "In a World of My Own" (Alice in Wonderland), "For a Moment" (The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea), "Where Dreams Begin".

Next is the DVD release of You Can Fly!. I can't remember if I mentioned it in the last part of this overview, but the song "He's a Tramp" was removed for both the 1994 VHS and this 2006 DVD release. Otherwise everything is the same as previous releases.

The Bare Necessities wasn't altered for this DVD release either. At least not too much. There's some dialogue change from Jiminy Cricket before two of the songs, and there's no voiceover for the original 1987 Disney Sing-Along Songs promo at the end, but everything else is exactly the same. I have it in my collection and even though I'm watching it on DVD, I still look back on it with nostalgia, just because it's original VHS release was the first Sing-Along Songs tape I ever owned and the first one I ever watched.

There's no change to the DVD release of I Love to Laugh/Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious except that both names are on the cover now, not just one or the other. The covers themselves are pretty cool though.

Next is the DVD release of Pongo & Perdita. The only change between this and the original VHS release is that the lyrics and Mickey the Bouncing Ball are added, because apparently on the original VHS release they weren't for some odd reason.

Next is the DVD release for Happy Haunting Party at Disneyland!. I've seen both versions on YouTube, and nothing changed between the two releases, even the cover art is the same. So there's nothing to say about that. This is also the final DVD release of a previous Sing-Along Songs VHS.

Finally on February 14th, 2006, the final volume of Disney Sing-Along Songs, Disney Princess Sing-Along Songs Vol. 3: Perfectly Princess, was released. It's not explained why the Disney Sing-Along Songs series was discontinued after 20 years. Probably because the sing-along aspect was actually being put on the DVD releases of the movies at this point. But maybe also because the older movies weren't being re-released theatrically anymore, aside from things like the 3-D releases of Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Lion King (1994). Regardless, this is the final entry in the Disney Sing-Along Songs series so let's see what songs were included.

The songs are: "Disney Sing-Along Songs Theme Song", "In Harmony" (The Little Mermaid: The Animated Series), "It's What's Inside That Counts" (Cinderella II: Dreams Come True), "Out of Thin Air" (Aladdin and the King of Thieves), "A Little Thought" (Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World), "Where Do I Go From Here?" (Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World), "Whistle While You Work" (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), "All in the Golden Afternoon" (Alice in Wonderland), "The Work Song" (Cinderella), "Belle" (Beauty and the Beast), "Lesson Number One" (Mulan II), "Here on the Land and Sea" (The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea), and "It's Not Just Make Believe" (Ella Enchanted).

And that my friends is the end of my Disney Sing-Along Songs overview. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did. This series, particularly the early tapes from 1987 to 1995, was a pretty major part of my childhood. It entertained me at home and at the hospital and I had many wonderful hours singing along to all of the songs. If you were born between 1982 and 2000 and grew up in a Disney household, then chances are you grew up with at least one of these tapes or DVDs during their original run. If you were born in 2001 and later, then you might've grown up with just the DVDs. And if you did, please let me know in the comments anywhere you are where I post the link, be it Facebook or Twitter.

And THAT is it for me for this week. I will be back next week with more posts, including another segment of my DC Comics's Star Trek overview, my next Power Rangers review where I'll be taking a look at the original version of the pilot episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, "Day of the Dumpster" and lots, lots more posts and reviews. So until then have a wonderful night, and an amazing weekend and I will talk to you all later. Take care.
