Hey everyone, how's it going? I'm doing pretty well. Today I'd like to talk about the two shows that I watched on TV on Sunday mornings in 1998. Let's get into it.
So all of these shows that I watched aired on Global TV during this time. The first on this list is the Nickelodeon produced TV adaptation of Animorphs by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. The book series ran from 1996 to 2001, and was published by Scholastic. The TV show was a pale immitation of the books, but really, what TV show or movie adaptation of a book series isn't? The thing I like about this show is the cast. They were all starting their acting careers with this show, and while Shawn Ashmore (Jake) has had universal acclaim for his role as Bobby Drake/Ice Man in the original X-Men film trilogy, Brooke Nevin (Rachel) and Paulo Costanzo (Ax) have also had long acting careers in film and television. Because of the lack of a budget this show had, the aliens, besides the one Hork-Bajir, and occasionally Visser Three and Ax in their Andalite forms, don't appear in the show at all. The show isn't available on physical media, but it's streaming on Amazon, and lower quality versions have been available on YouTube and the Internet Archive for years. Twelve episodes are also available on VHS.
Men in Black was a hugely successful movie when it came out in the summer of 1997. It didn't take very long for an animated series based on the movie to be produced. The show aired on Kids WB from October 11th, 1997 to June 30th, 2001. Despite it being based on the movie, there's obviously some differences between the movie and the show. For example, Agent K didn't retire like he did at the end of the movie. It was always on after Animorphs and I'm pretty sure I saw the show before I ever saw the movie, though I was very well aware of the movie, because it was huge, at least until Titanic replaced it. The first season is on DVD, but the rest of the series isn't, though it's all available for streaming on Tubi.
Now as I mentioned, I'd watch these shows on the Global Television Network on Sunday mornings. I grew up in a Christian family, and every Sunday morning my mom would take my siblings and I to church while my dad was at work, as he was working weekends during this time. And these are the shows that I watched before we left for church. After getting dressed for church, I'd go downstairs and turn on the TV in the family room just before Animorphs started and we'd leave for church as soon as Men in Black: The Series was over. This was before I found out that Animorphs also aired on YTV during the week, though even after that I'd still watch it on Global on Sunday mornings, just because that's where I started watching it. I'll get into that more when I finally do a blog post on the Animorphs TV show on its own.
That's it for me for today. I'll be back on Friday over on The Star Wars Journal to talk about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and how my opinion of it has or hasn't changed after seeing both seasons of Andor. Next week I've got a fun post on my favourite NES and SNES games for you here in the Geek Cave. So until then have a great evening and I will talk to you all later. Take care.
